Nine American League teams are still fighting it out for five playoff spots. Anything can happen. Nothing is close to being set in stone. Over in the National League, however, the Dodgers and Braves have all but wrapped up playoff spots while three National League central teams have a pretty good grasp on the others.

The New York Yankees' quest to claw their way back into the American League wild-card race may have taken a huge blow, as second baseman Robinson Cano had to leave Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with an apparent right hand contusion.

Miguel Cabrera is one month away from possibly joining the likes of Nap Lajoie, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Chuck Klein and Carl Yastrzemski.

In 2012, nobody could stop Miguel Cabrera from finishing off the first Triple Crown season since Carl Yastrzemski’s in 1967.

In 2013, there’s one guy who could stop Miggy from becoming the first player in history to win two straight Triple Crowns: Baltimore Orioles slugger Chris Davis.

Looking to secure not only a postseason berth but the NL Central division title, the Pittsburgh Pirates have added a pair of veteran bats in a deal with the New York Mets.

If you love someone, set him or her free. At least, that's how the New York Mets might spin Tuesday's Marlon Byrd T-shirt giveaway in light of their trade of the outfielder to the Pittsburgh Pirates. 

Rumors of Byrd being dealt spread throughout the Internet on Monday and spawned this tweet from Mets correspondent Andrew Harts: 

Season-ending surgeries sprinkled in with promising performances characterize the St. Louis Cardinals’ Top 10 prospects for the week of Aug. 19.

Injuries are part of the game, sure. Oscar Taveras, the organization’s top prospect is out for the season, left-handed starting pitcher John Gast and right-hander Tyrell Jenkins are also lost for the season due to significant injury.

However, with every downfall, a glimmer of hope emerges down on the farm. A number of young, talented players are getting hot at the right time as their season draws to a close.

The Pittsburgh Pirates got a much-needed corner outfield power hitter for the stretch run by acquiring Marlon Byrd from the New York Mets, as well as catcher John Buck, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. 

The Mets' official Twitter account has confirmed the move and provided more details:

It's good to take time to appreciate the little things.

The San Francisco Giants currently have the worst record in the NL West, but this doesn't stop Pablo Sandoval and Hunter Pence from sharing a dance as part of their adorable dugout handshake.

The fantasy season, like the regular season, is coming to a close, but there is still time to make a difference in September thanks to the wonder of September call-ups. 

Most of the top prospects who were going to get brought up this year have been called up already. We aren't going to see a more highly-regarded player than Boston's Xander Bogaerts, brought up last week, before the end of the year, though that doesn't mean there aren't options to choose from.
