Come To Think Of It: Breaking News Of Samardzija Call-Up Defies Logic

According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs will call up pitcher Jeff Samardzija on Thursday to join the bullpen.

Sullivan speculates that the team could release Luis Vizcaino to make room for "The Shark."

Now, first of all, Paul Sullivan is a real dumb ass. But if this is true, it makes little sense.

What they ought to do is to put Samardzija in the starting rotation, so they can move Sean Marshall to the bullpen and dump the horribly ineffective Neal Cotts.

That seems so logical that I wonder if it will happen.

Look, the reason they sent Samardzija down in the first place was to stretch him out as a starter. So now you bring him back up to pitch in the bullpen? Huh?

And, on top of it, you eat $3.5 million in contract by releasing Vizcaino?

While I certainly won't shed a tear if Vizcaino goes bye-bye, as it was a stupid trade to begin with, I question the logic of keeping Cotts in the pen.

It should be obvious to anyone who watches Cubs baseball that Lou has no confidence in Cotts. And why should he? He can't find the plate.

Cubs.com is reporting that a call-up of Samardzija is not imminent, yet mlbtraderumors.com is jumping all over the rumor, courtesy of the Sullivan article in the Trib.

Let's hope that logic prevails and that Sullivan is wrong, come to think of it.
