End of an Era: Bud Selig Stepping Down After 2012 Season?

Could it be? Could the prayers of many baseball executives, players, and fans across the country finally becoming true?

According to a report from Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune , longtime Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig plans to step down after the 2012 season.

Since becoming commissioner of the league in 1992, Selig has had his good moments and moments he'd rather forget.

He introduced the Wild Card, interleague play, revenue sharing, and implemented the most stringent drug-testing program in any of the four major sports in North America.

There was also a report that Selig was "seriously considering" re-instating Pete Rose ealier this year in the New York Daily News . But those rumors died when Selig didn't believe Rose was "reconfiguring" his life.

Unfortunately, what Selig may be more well known for is his blunder during the 2002 All Star Game.

With the score tied in the 11th and both sides out of pitchers, the umpires met with Selig, who was seated down the right field line. After a few minutes, Selig decided to end the game with a tie, sending fans into a frenzy and they let him know about by booing him out of the stadium.

He also went through highs and lows during home run chases by Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds, getting flak from a lot of fans to add an asterisk to Bonds' record because of his alleged use of steroids and other banned substances.

What Selig's legacy is remains to be seen, but the last few years of his tenure will be known for the last days of Barry Bonds and the All Star Game fiasco.

But he may be better known for instituting home field advantage for the winner of the All Star Game. Something players and fans alike did not agree with from the very start.
