Former Yankee and Current Brave Melky Cabrera Is Batting .195

Melky Cabrera was a homegrown, high spirited player, with knack for big hits late in games so it is only natural that fans be upset when he left. Many fans even held it against Javier Vazquez during the offseason and into the season swearing that the Yankees would regret the deal.

Well we’re getting close to the end of May here and Vazquez only has a couple of decent starts under his belt, but I think it’s safe to say the Yankees are not regretting trading the Melk-Man. Here are his numbers so far:

37 G, 113 AB, 10 R, 22 H, 4 2B, 0 3B, 0 HR, 8 RBI, 0 SB, 1 CS, 14 BB, 15 K’s, .195 BA, .283 OBP, .230 SLG, .514 OPS, 40 OPS+.

Pathetic.

Naturally this is only about a month and a half worth of baseball and he can still turn his season around, but that doesn’t appear to be happening anytime soon as he has been hitting an even worse .125 over the last week.

Yes, the Yankees have paid a lot of cash for Vazquez and they also gave up 19-year-old prospect Arodys Vizcaino in the deal too, but I keep hearing that they would have “been better off with Melky” and that just isn’t true. Not only would Melky be delivering sour milk to Bronx residents, but he would probably have kept Brett Gardner from playing everyday too.

Melky was/is a decent outfielder, but he was certainly nothing special and was easily replaced. It’s time that some fans started realizing that.
