Houston Astros: 2010 Fantasy Baseball Preview

The Astros are full of players that had a huge fantasy impact in the past, unfortunately it seems that the impact is fading.  Oswalt, Berkman, and Carlos Lee have been early round picks for years, but last year they each showed some signs that their numbers are past their peak.  So how should we approach these players this year? Here is what you can expect from the Astros' core this season.

Roy Oswalt
It was apparent last season that Oswalt was not himself.  We found out why when he was shut down early because of a lingering back issue.  What is more alarming is that Oswalt has declined back surgery because it could cause some issues with nerves in his leg.  This certainly can't be good for his 2010 outlook.  The good news is that he did have more than the full offseason to rest his back.  Don't count on Roy to be your ace this season, but he is worth a shot as your third or fourth starter if his back is still feeling good when the season starts.

Lance Berkman
Lance had a disappointing 2009, finishing up with a .274 average, 25 home runs, and 80 RBIs.  The good news is that while his numbers were down, his productivity increased as the summer went on.  Berkman has always been an OPS machine and last year was no exception despite the decrease in power numbers.  He should be safe to draft as your first baseman once all the first tier options are off the board.

Carlos Lee
Consistent Carlos used to be sure to hit 30 home runs and 100 RBIs every summer.  Even though fantasy owners saw a dip in home runs last season down to 26, they have no reason to be concerned.  Lee still had a batting average at .300, pounded in 100 RBIs, and had showed that he can still find the gap by hitting 37 doubles.  Carlos is not an elite talent in the outfield, but you should be happy with him as your second outfielder.

  1. Roy Oswalt (SP) - Worth a shot as a middle round injury risk.
  2. Carlos Lee (OF) - Consistently above 25 HR and 100 RBIs.  Expect more of the same.
  3. Lance Berkman (1B) - You could get a good bargain out of Berkman who will likely rebound this season.
  4. Wandy Rodriguez (SP) - Magic Wandy will need to do it again to convince people he is legit.
  5. Michael Bourn (OF) - Make sure he is on your team in roto leagues.
  6. Hunter Pence (OF) - Pence would make a nice outfielder off your bench.
  7. Brett Myers (SP) - Has great stuff, but has trouble controlling it.  Worth a late round selection.
  8. Matt Lidstrom (RP) - Not one of the top closers, but he is bound to get 25 saves if he keeps the job.
