One of the four players that the Minnesota Twins received for their former star, Johan Santana, may soon be gone.
The Twins today announced that they have designated long reliever Phillip Humber for assignment.
The move comes a night after the bullpen allowed the Toronto Blue Jays to post a seven spot in the seventh inning to end the pitcher's duel and effectively hand the team their fifth loss in the past six games.
Humber came over to the team last season along with center fielder Carlos Gomez and minor league pitchers Kevin Mulvey and Deolis Guerra.
Humber is expected to be claimed and one of the pieces from the blockbuster trade will likely be pitching elsewhere in the majors at the end of the season rather than with the team's triple-A affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings (Rochester, N.Y.).
Last season Humber was a September call up, and with no options remaining this spring, the Twins handed him a roster spot. With R.A. Dickey aboard, and back in the bullpen after making one spot start, the Twins no longer need two long relievers—thus allowing the move.
To take Humber's place on the roster, the Twins made a claim of their own. Juan Morillo has been claimed from the Colorado Rockies and will wear No. 31.
The righty throws hard and has often touched 95 MPH on the gun; yet control is an issue, and to become a stopgap in the bullpen, it's one he'll need to fix.
