The Pittsburgh Pirates added some depth at first base Thursday in the form of infielder Jason Rogers.
The team announced on Twitter it acquired Rogers from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for outfielder Keon Broxton and pitcher Trey Supak.
Rogers played 86 games for the Brewers last season and hit .296 with four home runs, 16 RBI and an .808 OPS. He primarily played first base in the field, although he appeared at third base and left field as well and gives the Pirates some versatility with their lineup alongside first baseman Michael Morse.
Rogers was a mediocre fielder at best and was responsible for minus-one total defensive runs saved above average at first base in 2015, per FanGraphs.
Despite potential fielding concerns, Rogers offers Pittsburgh a solid weapon against right-handed pitching. According to ESPN.com, he hit .317 against righties last year and can be utilized as a pinch hitter in late-game situations to create ideal matchups even if it goes against traditional platoon splits.
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington shared some comments on the trade with Adam Berry of MLB.com, which Adam McCalvy of MLB.com passed along:
As for Broxton, he had two at-bats in 2015 for Pittsburgh, although he scored three runs in seven appearances. He brings some speed to the table, but MLB.com did not rank him among Pittsburgh’s top 30 prospects heading into the 2015 campaign.
MLB.com did list Supak there as the team’s 15th-best prospect. He has not appeared in a major league game, although he struggled in the minor leagues in 2015 with a 6.67 ERA and 35 hits allowed in 28.1 innings for the Bristol Pirates, per MiLB.com. However, he is only 19 years old and theoretically has plenty of productive seasons ahead of him.
Brewers general manager David Stearns weighed in on his franchise's decision, per McCalvy:
The Brewers are not expected to contend in 2016, so the acquisition of a promising young pitcher is more productive for the team’s long-term future than holding on to Rogers.
