Josh Hamilton of Texas Rangers Could Land on DL After Head-First Slide at Home

Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers was hurt trying to make a head-first slide into home base on Tuesday’s 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

In the second inning, a foul ball was hit, and Hamilton was told to head home because no one was covering home plate. Victor Martinez ended up making the play on Hamilton that ended up costing the Rangers their MVP, as well as the reigning AL MVP.

"It was just a stupid play," Hamilton said. "I definitely shouldn't have done it. They had a good angle to cut me off where I was going. It was a little too aggressive. The whole time, I was watching the play and I was listening. I was like, 'Dude, I don't want to go. Something is going to happen.' But I listened to my coach (Dave Anderson) and I went."

Hamilton said he heard two pops from his shoulder during the play.

Hamilton is a key loss to the Rangers as they jumped out to a 9-2 start to the season.

This means the Rangers lose Hamilton in center field, and we will see Julio Borbon and David Murphy cover center field and left field without Hamilton.

There may also be a case for Michael Young to play outfield or to move Mike Napoli from first base, so at least there is no loss of veteran leadership on the outfield.

Hamilton was in a sling, and looking at the sling, as well as the way he reacted to the play, an extended time on the DL may be in order.

The good news was the shoulder was x-rayed and it came back negative for separation or dislocation. A MRI will confirm if Hamilton will see time on the DL on Wednesday.
