Justin Verlander Injury: Updates on Tigers Star's Back and Return

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander will not make his next scheduled start against the Cleveland Indians due to mid-back stiffness, per the Tigers.

Buck Farmer to Start in Place of Verlander vs. Indians

Tuesday, June 23

Jason Beck of MLB.com reported the Tigers are hopeful Verlander is ready to pitch again within five days; however, Farmer will start Wednesday in his stead, per the team.

Verlander missed the start of the season due to a triceps injury. It was the first trip to the disabled list for the longtime Tigers ace, who's been one of the most durable pitchers in baseball for nearly a decade. He made at least 30 starts in each of the past nine seasons.

While Detroit awaits further word on his status, the question becomes whether he's going through a stretch of bad luck or if the wear and tear is starting to take its toll. He has a lot of high-velocity innings on his right arm at age 32.

The Tigers will hope it's only another minor setback. The team's rotation isn't nearly as deep when he's sidelined.
