The Mets have finally, finally, finally made a move this off-season.
In an off-season full of total disappointment as Mets GM Omar Minaya failed to make plays for John Lackey, Jason Marquis, Randy Wolf, and Roy Halladay, it appears that the Mets will finally make a splash this winter.
According to WFAN radio host Mike Francesca, the Mets will sign outfielder Jason Bay to a long term contract. The deal is pending a physical and, according to Francesca, the Mets will make an announcement after the New Year.
The Mets initially offered Bay a four year $65 million contract three weeks ago, and have waited ever since for a call back from Bay and his agent.
If the story is true, the Mets will get the outfield bat that they have desperately needed. The Mets had to mix and match with the likes of Daniel Murphy, Angel Pagan and Gary Sheffield in left field last season.
All three were virtual failures.
Murphy couldn't play a competent outfield and was moved to first base. Sheffield ran out of gas by May, and Pagan was nothing more than the average bench player.
Last season with Boston, Bay hit .267 with 36 homers and 119 RBI. He was a big time player for Boston after the team traded away Manny Ramirez at the 2008 trade deadline. His knack for clutch homers and clutch hits made him a quick fan favorite in Boston. Although he didn't help Boston win another World Series, his loss will be the Mets gain in 2010.
Now he will get a chance to win over the fans of the Metropolitans, who are dying for better days in the new decade.
