The Yankees might not have had a game today, but there was some activity in the lockerroom.
The Yankees made some of their Spring Training cuts today and sent some players packing. Highly awaited Yankees prospect, Jesus Montero, was one of the several players sent to the minor league camp. Austin Romine, Colin Curtis, and Reid Gorecki were some of the notable other players sent along with Montero.
Montero had two doubles in eight chances with the Yankees, as they took on teams in the Grapefruit League. According to several sources, the Yankees would like to have him spend all of 2010 developing further in AAA Scranton. It is Montero's heavy and strong bat that will make it hard for the Yankees to keep such a highly touted player down.
The next time that Yankee fans can see Montero could be as he dons the Yankee pinstripes in the Bronx. Montero could be the Yankees designated hitter or catcher should anything happen to the injury-prone Nick Johnson or the aging Jorge Posada. Montero ranks 17th on the Top 50 Prospects in baseball.
Austin Romine is also considered to be a great catcher in the Yankees system. He has been sent down to the minor league camp and is slated to start the season in AA Trenton. He had a 2-11 performance in Spring Training, but had manager Joe Girardi pleased with a glimpse of the future's potential. Romine played in A-Tampa last year and could use quite a bit of time before getting a major league call-up.
The Yankees future is looking bright, and the moves to send down some of these young players looks to be for the better. Some of these guys may make their debut as early as August or September.
The Yankees have a promising future and Montero and Romine look to be at the core of a great catching system in the Bronx.
