The San Diego Padres defeated the Seattle Mariners 4-3 Thursday afternoon in the rubber match of a three-game series. The Padres (29-36) were able to avoid a three-game sweep with the mid-day sun beaming down on the crowd of more than 25,000 at Petco Park.
The visiting Mariners (32-24) got out to an early lead when Ken Griffey Jr. jolted a ball deep to left-center field to plate Mike Carp for the 1-0 lead. Young Brandon Morrow started his second game since returning from the DL for the Mariners.
Morrow gave up two runs on five hits, leaving the game after the fourth with a no decision.
Franklin Gutierrez hit two solo home runs for the M's, the first in the fourth and another in the sixth, which regained the lead at 3-2. It was the first career multi-home run game for Gutierrez.
Adrian Gonzalez also had a career day, recording four hits and stroking a long ball of his own. Gutierrez nearly brought the ball back, but saw it tip off of his glove and barely leave the yard. It was the 23rd home run of the season for Gonzalez, which ties Albert Pujols for tops in the bigs.
Gonzalez also scored the winning run in the 10th following a double with two outs and nobody on base off of Miguel Batista. Kevin Kouzmanoff came up next and hit a walk off single to give the Friars a 4-3 victory.
