Philadelphia Phillies Swap Aces: What's the Deal?

This morning I got up and saw that Roy Halladay was in Philadelphia with his agent.  The second I saw that I got the same exact feeling I got on July 29 when rumors started swirling about a deal for Cliff Lee.

Well today it looks like the Cliff Lee era in Philadelphia is all but over.  Rumors all across the Internet, from ESPN to Sports Illustrated to Twitter and to blogs like my own have the Phillies involved in a three-team trade.  This deal would send Roy Halladay to the Phillies and Cliff Lee to the Mariners while both teams would send prospects to the Blue Jays.

I don’t know how I feel about this.  Maybe I’m just greedy, but man, wouldn’t it be great to keep Lee for the 2010 season?

I know that he said he wants to test free agency. I am fine with that. In 2010 Lee is due $8 million.  After 2010, I really don’t care if he doesn’t sign with the Phillies.  If Ruben Amaro, Jr. could work some magic that would bring the best pitcher of the decade to Philadelphia in Halladay while also keeping Lee in the mix for 2010 then this team would be ready to capture another World Series.

Imagine this rotation:  Lee (LHP), Halladay (RHP), Hamels (LHP), Myers/Blanton (RHP) and Happ (LHP).  Talk about a balanced rotation.

To do this the Phillies would have to stretch their budget to around the $150 million range for the season.  But if they become the most dominant team in the league and a perennial championship contender, isn’t it worth it?
