The Rally Cap Is Back

Over the last two nights, I was fortunate enough to make it to consecutive baseball games in Arlington. It’s rare for me to get the chance to go on consecutive days these days, but the games did not disappoint in the slightest bit.

For those that don’t know the Texas Rangers won the last two games with walk offs. Those were come-from-behind victories as well. It’s always exciting to see the Rangers win, but with two come from behind walk-offs?

That’s something special.

Something else happened late in both those games that got me thinking.

The Rally Cap is back.

I’m not one to believe in superstitions, at least most of them, but I’d thought I’d give the Rally Cap a try.

On Wednesday night, I turned my cap inside out, and told my friend to do the same. It was the bottom of the 11th inning when we did this. The Rangers were down by one run.

Michael Young gets a single into right field. Then he steals second base. That’s when my friend decides to take off the Rally Cap and wear the hat the right way.

I decided to keep my Rally Cap on.

Josh Hamilton drew the walk, and then Andruw Jones flew out to center field.

Hank Blalock steps up the plate and magic happened. I can’t remember the count when he hit the game winning double, but I know it wasn’t on the first pitch.

Right before the hit, I told my friend to put the Rally Cap back on. It was the greatest feeling in the world to see the Rally Cap work like that. Blalock ended up hitting the ball to the deepest part of the park to score two runs.

It led many fans, including myself, to run out of the ballpark screaming and giving people those high-fives. It’s such a good feeling seeing everyone into the game. The ballpark staff and security guards were all into it too. It seemed like a scene right out of a movie. 

I was also wearing a Hank Blalock jersey I received in one of the Rangers promotions over the years. On opening day Blalock hit a home run. I called that home run, too, right before it happened. I have a friend as a witness.

Right when I thought it couldn’t get any better, the same thing happened the next day. Another friend calls me an hour before the game starts. I couldn’t resist going to a Ranger game, especially the way the Rangers are playing.

The Rangers were down 2-0, headed into the bottom of the ninth inning. I decide to turn my hat inside out once again, and Blalock hits a lead-off home run into the upper deck.

I also wore the same Blalock shirt.

Two batters later, David Murphy gets a double. Everyone in the park started to get excited again.

The next batter Chris Davis steps up to the plate. Boom, he hits a two-run bomb to win the game.

My friend happened to be wearing a Chris Davis jersey, too. We both got home runs in the 9th inning, by the players’ jerseys we were wearing.

The two of us were so pumped up, we ran out of the ballpark screaming. Some of that was to beat the traffic, but we were still excited.

I have no idea what’s in store for the Rangers in the future, but this season has excitement written all over it.

Oh, and long live the Rally Cap.
