Redskins are the NFL's Next Top Model of Mediocrity

Give credit to the Washington Redskins for one thing that they do right; no team is better at modeling the attitudes of their owner and fan base.

We knew that the Redskins would lose on the road to the Atlanta Falcons and they didn’t disappoint. What we didn’t know was how DeAngelo Hall would react in his homecoming to the city that heralded his drafting as the second coming of Primetime five years ago.

He didn’t disappoint. He and LaRon Landry turned a late-hit on the Falcons sideline into a fracas worthy of commentary from NeNe Leakes . Hall and Landry acted out on the field the way legions of Skins’ fans feel about the franchise; let’s take some shots, exert in frustration and sort it all out later on.

They even did a good job modeling Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, who in his marketing genius, rarely drafts offensive linemen. The result? An injured Clinton Portis , who would be a strong candidate for an “most likely to shut it down for the season with a minor injury award,” and validation for Jason Campbell, who discovered yesterday that his receivers are now a little tired of catching the ball.

The saddest part is that the Redskins are showing the world everything they have. They really don’t have much more to give in the way of execution. Maybe they can do a complete reversal of last season and finish out 6-2; which would be the only scenario in which Jim Zorn would be fired 48 hours after the conclusion of the season, rather than during the post-game press conference of the final game.

The only thing that makes the Redskins different from the Oakland Raiders or Cleveland Browns is that the franchise hasn’t lost long enough to give back the paper championships awarded to them every season. But what makes them worse is that the team is now modeling the behavior of all the wrong parties; jilted fans and a clueless owner.
