This week it was announced that a grand jury is indicting Roger Clemens for lying to congress. Really. In this economy.
Glad to know we're keeping on top of the things that are important.
I've been very clear in several articles that I think we need to give up the war on PED's because it will never work. But even if you believe that drug testing in sports can work, you have to admit that prosecutions like this one are frivolous.
Why Clemens? A man who is still in denial about using.
Why not Rafael Palmeiro? We know he used.
Well, I'll tell you why. Because Clemens is a bigger name and therefore a better career builder for the prosecutors. This is about a bunch of social climbers using my tax money to enhance their career.
And they're supposed to be the good guys.
Not only that. I don't see any way they can win this case unless the Rocket cuts a deal.
To win a perjury trial the prosecution has to prove that an individual not only lied, but that he knowingly lied. Beyond a reasonable doubt.
From what I understand, their whole case is based on Andy Pettitte's testimony against Clemens. Pettitte is an admitted liar and an admitted steroids user.
Clemens has never backed off on his claim that he never used.
Now the prosecution has to not only prove that Clemens took steroids, but they have to prove the he wasn't in denial at the time, and knew full well what he was doing.
This is why so few perjury cases are pursued. It's a near impossible task. You need overwhelming evidence. Not the testimony of a couple of known liars, in a "He said, she said" case.
The only reason this case is going forward is because some prosecutor wants a better job. Maybe move into politics so they steal our money from a more advantageous position.
Most ridiculous of all is the fact that a grand jury was convened for this nonsense.
Why did we even have the congressional hearings?
Why weren't these clowns looking into the difficulties in the housing sector? Why weren't they working on important issues?
As for Clemens. He's already screwed.
The best pitcher of his generation might miss the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. Heck, he might even have trouble just getting in now.
Pettitte on the other hand got to play on and win another ring. Alex Rodriguez, a known user and complete weasel will go into the Hall of Fame easily.
This whole witch hunt smacks of politics, favoritism, and payback.
But that's the world we live in. Life is not fair and Clemens is an easy target.
