Stetson University Considers Football

Stetson is currently a member of the Atlantic Sun conference and would look to join the Pioneer Football League, a non-scholarship league. A-Sun member Jacksonville is also a member and Mercer has expressed some football interest. If Stetson and another southeast school like Mercer were to join the Pioneer, you could potentially see (2) divisions formed such as:

East: Marist, Campbell, Davidson, Jacksonville, Stetson, Mercer
West: Morehead St, Dayton, Drake, Butler, Valpo, San Diego

From Dayton Beach Journal :

"Stetson University — are you ready for some football? That question may get a quick answer as university officials are gathering information and evaluating the feasibility of starting a Football Championship Subdivision (formally Division I-AA) nonscholarship program. Athletics Director Jeff Altier said Thursday he is forming a select committee to evaluate a recommendation by a university committee that football be brought back to the school. The Hatters last played football in 1956, and Altier said it usually takes a minimum of three years from when a decision is made to start a program and actually play the first game. “We’re gathering information,” Altier said. “The recommendation in regards to football is to further study the feasibility. We’re going to move very quickly on this (evaluation process), probably after basketball season.”
