Texas Rangers Sign Endy Chavez To Minor League Deal

I think it’s pretty safe to say that no matter what Endy Chavez accomplishes in the major leagues from here on out, he will always be remembered for one spectacular catch in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS when he was with the New York Mets.

That catch, which robbed Scott Rolen of a home run, will be on MLB Network’s Prime Nine: Best Post Season Catches from now until that program goes off the air. It was that good.

Here is the catch from a fan’s prospective in case you want to see it again or missed it somehow the first time around:

Its been almost four years now since that catch and instead of being a starting left fielder for a playoff team, Chavez is just trying to find a job in the major leagues.

Perhaps he found that job with the Texas Rangers.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com , the Texas Rangers have signed Chavez to a minor league contract. Chavez can earn a cool $1 million if he makes the team and the Rangers will hold a $1.25 million option for him in 2011.

Chavez, coming off ACL surgery last year, will be hard pressed to make the Rangers roster.

The Rangers already have Julio Borbon, David Murphy, Nelson Cruz, Josh Hamilton, Brandon Boggs, and Vladimir Guerrero on their 40-man roster. That’s some pretty heavy lumber already patrolling the Rangers OF in 2010.

If Chavez does make the roster, he will serve as a pinch-runner off the bench and a player who can play all three outfield positions late in the game. At most, he would be a fifth outfielder on the Rangers.

The-32-year-old hit .273 with two home runs, a .328 OBP, and nine stolen bases in 54 games last year with the Seattle Mariners.
