Tim Wakefield Still Up in the Air about Regular Season Role

Tim Wakefield made his sixth start of the spring yesterday against the Florida Marlins, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five Fish.

It was just the second time this spring he surrendered runs, as he improved to 3-1, 3.66.

Afterwards, he said he hasn’t been told anything about the ball club’s plans for him once the regular season opens, though he seems assured to start the year in the rotation due to Daisuke Matsuzaka’s continuing physical issues:

“I’m very curious.... Normally I kind of know what’s going on. I think they have some decisions to make. We’ll see what happens.”

Wakefield again appears to be passive-aggressive in his comments, not wanting to ridicule his manager or the front office while making it clear he’s unhappy he’s been kept in limbo.

Sox pitching coach John Farrell said the entire pitching staff will learn their official roles shortly:

“We are fortunate to have five healthy and very good starting pitchers. We have not arrived at that final decision and there is ongoing dialogue from within (the brain trust). Out of respect to Wake and everybody else in the organization, they’ll be met with individually and given those thoughts in due time and a very short amount of time....

“We’ve got 10 days before we open up, and once they’re spoken with it will become more of an announcement for everyone who is playing close to attention.”
