Over the years, there have been many Major League Baseball players with special gifts. No player in MLB history has had a bigger advantage in a game than Eddie Gaedel.
On this date 63 years ago, the 3'7" Gaedel was sent to the plate to bat for the St. Louis Browns against the Detroit Tigers. Given the size of his strike zone, it's not hard to predict how the plate appearance turned out.
Gaedel, while wearing No. 1/8, walked against the Tigers' Bob Cain on four pitches. Gaedel was lifted for a pinch runner once he reached first base. Just like that, his MLB career was over.
Browns owner Bill Veeck was known for his wild promotions and stunts. Signing Gaedel, the shortest player in MLB history, to a contract was one of his craziest ideas.
