After three straight six-win seasons, Aaron Harang and the Cincinnati Reds parted ways this offseason. The 6'7", 250-pound hurler signed with his hometown San Diego Padres.
Harang spent seven years with the Reds, posting two 16-win seasons in what is arguably the worst pitcher’s park in all of baseball. Although his 4.32 career ERA is certainly not impressive, Harang is an above-average strikeout pitcher who has averaged nearly eight K's per nine innings over the past seven years.
Harang is a fast worker who pounds the strike zone with a excellent fastball and a sharp slider, making him an excellent addition to manager Bud Black’s rotation.
He begins the 2011 season at only 32 years old, and has been relatively healthy over the majority of his career. Harang joins a Padres rotation that benefits from the tutelage of Black, a former pitcher who has created one of the league’s best rotations without the benefit of a large payroll.
In addition, the Friars play in the cavernous Petco Park, perhaps the most pitcher-friendly ballpark in the National League.
Fantasy owners have yet to see the value in Harang, as he is currently available in 93 percent of Yahoo! Leagues. Savvy owners who are looking for a decent No. 4/5 starter in deep mixed and NL-only leagues should think about making a move for Harang, as he has an excellent chance of posting double-digit wins in 2011.
