According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, Philadelphia lefty Cole Hamels is officially out of consideration for opening night versus the Atlanta Braves.
After injuring his pitching elbow a few weeks ago, Philly "phans" were sure their ace was going to be good to go on Apr. 5.
However, after allowing 10 hits against the pride of Philadelphia's farm on Mar. 30 in four innings (he also walked one and Kd five), pitching coach Rich Dubie said the Philly Phenom's control just wasn't good enough for the season's first game.
Hamels will, however, pitch an exhibition game on Saturday against the Rays.
Presumably, Brett Myers will assume the ceremonial position.
Saying this, Charlie Manuel said that Joe Blanton, Oakland's opening day starter last season, has a shot at the spot as well.
But, in my not-so-expert opinion, Myers, who will be on regular rest, will be matching up against Atlanta's acting ace, Derek Lowe.
You have to think the Braves' players down at Lake Buena Vista are rejoicing over the fact that they do not have to face the Philadelphia staff leader (who absolutely dominated them last season).
Myers v. Lowe (unlike my Marbury v. Madison supreme court project in Civics/Economics Honors) should prove to be an interesting match-up between two solid top-of-the-rotation hurlers.
I now look forward to Opening Night with a new sense of hope for my beloved Bravos.
However, although I could not find anything that is bad, this has to be a small concern for Phillie phans as their ace may be shelved for a short period of time.
