The Miami Marlins' Jose Fernandez is the best young pitcher in Major League Baseball, but he had not pitched a professional game in front of his grandmother—until Monday.

In 2013, Fernandez was sensational. The right-hander went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. His numbers ranked among the best in the National League, and he ran away with the NL Rookie of the Year award.

The Boston Red Sox made their trip to the White House on Tuesday, and designated hitter David Ortiz wanted to make sure that he had a way to remember the visit.

Although Ortiz had already won two Fall Classics with the Red Sox before last season, he had yet to earn a trip to the White House with President Barack Obama in office.

New York Mets closer Bobby Parnell suffered a partial tear of his MCL in his right elbow during Monday's Opening Day loss to the Washington Nationals, according to Major League Baseball on Twitter:
