Cincinnati Offense Makes Reds a Dark Horse in National League Pennant Race

With no real expectation hanging over them, the Cincinnati Reds enter the 2010 playoffs amid little fanfare, overshadowed considerably by their NLDS opponent, the 2008 World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies

Despite winning the NL Central, the Reds face a tough draw in a championship-caliber Philadelphia squad.

John Russell Dumped by Pirates, but No Sign of Real Change in Pittsburgh

As expected, the Pittsburgh Pirates showed manager John Russell the door late Monday morning.

No matter the reasons or excuses, you just cannot lose 300 games in three seasons and expect to keep your dugout job in any level of baseball.

General manager Neil Huntington says that the search for a replacement for Russell has already begun in organizational meetings in Bradenton, Florida.

Pittsburgh Pirates' Andrew McCutchen: The Next Great MLB Superstar

The words "superstar" and "Pittsburgh Pirates" haven't gone together since a young kid named Barry Bonds was making his clean mark on Major League Baseball as a five-tool left fielder during the Pirate's last winning season. That seems like a lifetime ago, when in reality it was roughly 20 years. Hard to believe that there are children in college who weren't born yet the last time the Pirates were any good or had a superstar.

Ken Macha To Be Fired as Milwaukee Brewers Manager

According to sources from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Ken Macha has managed his last game for the Milwaukee Brewers. His option for 2011 will not be picked up, and he'll be relieved of his duties on Monday.

Macha has managed the Brewers to back-to-back losing seasons after the team made the playoffs in 2008.

Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Zambrano Help the Chicago Cubs Rout the Houston Astros

The Chicago Cubs are having fun on the road.

They scored a total of eight runs in the first four innings on Saturday night as they beat the Houston Astros 8-3 in the second game of the final series of the 2010 season.

They improve the record of their current season-ending road trip to 5-1 and they will get a chance to sweep their division arch-rivals Sunday afternoon.

Tony LaRussa: How His House of St. Louis Cardinals Collapsed in 2010

The Cardinals came into this season expecting to challenge the Philadelphia Phillies for the National League pennant and to dethrone the New York Yankees in the World Series.

Fantasy Baseball Prospect Report: Brett Lawrie

Drafted in the first round of the 2008 draft (16th overall), Brett Lawrie appears primed to be a future fixture in the Milwaukee Brewers’ batting order.  He certainly posted an eye-opening Double-A campaign:

554 At-Bats
.285 Batting Average (158 Hits)
Eight Home Runs
63 RBI
90 Runs
30 Stolen Bases
.346 On Base Percentage
.451 Slugging Percentage
.350 Batting Average on Balls in Play

Pittsburgh Pirates and Five Players to be Excited about Next Year

The Pirates are concluding yet another terrible season with only two games left in the 2010 schedule. They are going to pick first overall in next year's draft and have over 100 losses.

This seems pretty dim and honestly it is hard to get excited over much, but the Pirates have their young core finally and have reinforcements on the way.

With any luck they will be just a little bit better in 2011 and will make huge strides in 2012. No need to look that far ahead as you will need a reason to get tickets for next year.

MLB Playoffs: Can Cincinnati Keep Crashing the Party?

The season is almost over, bones and hearts have been broken, while arms and dreams have been restored.  We have come a long way since April, but for Cincinnati, the fun is only beginning.

This 2010 edition of the Reds was picked by most to finish fourth or worse in the NL Central this year.  Not enough offense, not enough pitching, not enough experience, and on and on and on.

The Reds didn't get the memo.

Brad Snyder Hits an RBI-Single in the Ninth; Chicago Cubs Beat San Diego Padres

Since the September call-up, the Cubs rookie outfielder Brad Snyder has had the privilege of enjoying two double-RBI games in his first eight major league games.  On Thursday afternoon, he reached another level of enjoyment by hitting out first game-winning RBI.
