Seattle Mariners

Seattle Mariners

With Chone Figgins, Seattle Mariners Kill Two Birds with One Stone

Let’s get one thing straight. This isn’t a done deal. Yet.

We all remember how close the Mariners have come to signing other free agents over the years (Miguel Tejada, Vladimir Guerrero, Omar Vizquel, to name three), only to have the deals fall through at the 11th hour. So let’s not assume this thing is all locked up, at least not until the papers have been signed.

Seattle Mariners Leading the Chone Figgins Derby

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, the Seattle Mariners are "clear front-runners" to sign free agent third baseman Chone Figgins . The Mariners did offer Adrian Beltre , their starting third baseman for last several years, arbitration but he will likely sign elsewhere as he is only a Type-B free agent and his Gold Glove defence should be enough for him to get a contract he wants.

M's say, Nah, We'll Keep Our Enigma

According to SI baseball writer Jon Heyman, the Mariners reportedly quashed a deal that would have sent Brandon Morrow and Shawn Kelley to the Tigers for right-handed starter Edwin Jackson.

Now, I’ve made my feelings about Morrow known before—I thought it was a questionable choice to draft Morrow over Lincecum then, and, obviously, how it’s played out has done nothing to dissuade my opinion—so I think this is a curious move by Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik, who I think has done an otherwise fantastic job in the role.

Edgar Martinez as Hero: Shining Moments on a Hall of Fame Résumé

From what I’ve seen, the case that Edgar Martinez’s fans have cumulatively assembled to argue for him as Hall of Famer almost exclusively mentions only his statistical accomplishments as a hitter, gauged by both the traditional metrics and the advanced, sabermetric kind.

But of course it is people, not assemblages of statistics, who stand as candidates for the Hall of Fame, and that seems to be part of Edgar’s problem.

Edgar Martinez Deserves Hall of Fame Vote

Edgar Martinez has made the final list of eligibility for the 2010 MLB Hall of Fame, and it’s a deserving achievement.

Martinez is deserving to be in the National Baseball Hall of Fame, and when the voters sit down to decide if he should have their vote, they should make the correct decision and induct him.

Why Edgar Martinez Should Be Inducted Into the Baseball Hall of Fame

The ballot for the 2010 Major League Baseball Hall of Fame was announced on Friday, and 26 players will be waiting on the phone call to join the most elite group in baseball.

Edgar Martinez is one of the 15 first-time players on the ballot, and he is certainly a unique case to consider.

Trading Jose Lopez: How Can the Mariners Improve in the Process?

WARNING: This article is heavily sabermetrics-oriented.

Assuming we don’t get a second baseman in return, which is quite unlikely, we’re obviously going to need someone to replace him.

In Geoff Baker’s recent article on the subject of trading Jose Lopez, he mentions both Orlando Hudson and Placido Polanco as potential free agent replacements, as well as the possibility of Matt Tuiasosopo or Bill Hall filling the void.

Seattle Mariners' AFL Wrap-Up: Dustin Ackley's Pro Debut a Success

2009 Arizona Fall League has ended as the Peoria Javelinas defeated the Phoenix Desert Dogs 5-4 to win the league.

Seven players from the Mariners organization played for the Javelinas and some looked they're close to the big league. Let's review how they've done this fall.

Dustin Ackley 1B/LF

The Mariners drafted Ackley second overall in last year's draft. He did not sign with the club until the signing deadline so he didn't play in the minors.

Seattle Mariners Need To Pull the Trigger on Trading for Edwin Jackson

As I am sure you all know, news broke recently about the Seattle Mariners potentially looking into trading for Edwin Jackson, most likely trading Brandon Morrow in the process. This is the first rumor of the offseason I want to see become a reality.

The most obvious reason for this is the fact that Seattle needs a solid starter behind Felix Hernandez. If they trade Morrow and get Jackson, it would really bolster the rotation.

The Mariners explored the option of picking up Jackson when he was still in Tampa Bay. Now could be the best time to pick him up.

Ken Griffey Jr. Is Back for Another Season With the Seattle Mariners

Every 1990’s little leaguers’ favorite player will be back for another year in 2010.

On Wednesday, Ken Griffey, Jr. signed a one-year deal worth $2 million plus performance incentives to stay with the Seattle Mariners for at least one more season.

Griffey turns 40 on November 21, but many still remember him as “The Kid.”
