Good, Bad, and Ugly: Washington Nationals Weekend Roundup

NATIONALS' CATCHER JESUS FLORES HOMERS TWICE OVER THE WEEKEND AGAINST  THE METS
In their first trip to CitiField against the New York Mets, the Washington Nationals fell Friday, 4-3, and Saturday, 8-2, and won 8-1 behind Jordan Zimmermann, Jesus Flores, and Austin Kearns on Sunday.
FRIDAY:  Johan Santana dominated the Nats once again, allowing one run on six hits and one walk, striking out 10 in six innings.

If the Nationals are serious, sign Strasburg… No Matter the Price

The best I've ever seen," says a longtime scout. "And it's not even close." These are the words of a longtime scout to Buster Olney, ESPN’s Acclaimed MLB senior writer, after watching the game’s future star. With the velocity of strikeout king Nolan Ryan and the pinpoint control of future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, Steven Strasburg is being touted by many in baseball as the greatest pitching prospect ever.

Good, Bad and Ugly: Washington Nationals Lose to Atlanta Braves, 1-0

THE RESULT
Michael Hinckley issued two walks in the top of the ninth, the second of which forced in the only run of the ballgame, and the Washington Nationals (3-11) lost to the Atlanta Braves, 1-0.

The loss ruined a terrific effort from their starter John Lannan. Lannan threw seven innings of five-hit shut out ball, walking just two and striking out four. But as it happened all last season, and once already this season, the bats fell silent during Lannan's start.

A Scout's Eye View of Jordan Zimmermann

In one of his first media interviews back in 2004, then general manager Jim Bowden made it very clear that first priority—his only priority really—was to stock the Nationals' barren farm system with pitching talent. "You develop pitchers," Bowden said, "and you find the bats through trades and free agency."

And so we watched as all those unknown names with a "P" next to their name were taken in the Amateur Draft in 2005, and 2006, and 2007, and we happily waited for them to mature from Minor League prospects into Major League pitchers.

And we waited.

The Best Sports Typos Redux

The English language is one of the most difficult to learn and master, it confuses many people to their dying day. But one would think that someone would use some form of spell check on major league teams jerseys before they trot them out in front of a huge crowd everyday. This list is a tribute to the best typos in pro sports. These are not in a Top 10 format, just a list of epic fails.

With special thanks to ESPN's Paul Lukas for the idea and several of the photos.

Spelling Not Just a Problem for DC Schools

Washington D.C. schools are a mess and people have been trying desperately to improve them over the years. Even the public school supporting the Obama family passed them up in favor of a private school.

But apparently the problem goes beyond the schools, to the interior of the Washington Nationals ballpark. A ballpark that is, ironically, located near one of the traditionally poorer sections of the Nation's capital.

The company that supplies their jerseys decided the team did not know how to spell their own name, and rechristened them the "Natinals."

Things Looking Up For Nationals (Yes, Really!)

Well, well; take a couple of weeks off and look what happens to the Washington Nationals.

I hope they don't expect me to clean up the mess.

Two weeks into the season and the Washington Nationals are in last place in the National League East. That's not unexpected. Their record is 2-10.

That's crazy.

But wait a minute. Before we write the team off as a "laughing stock" as so many national journalists and sports reporters already have, let's look a little deeper into all those layers of statistics that makes following baseball so much fun.

The Best Uniform Typos Of All Time

Nats Lock Up Zimmerman

Ryan Zimmerman is one of the only solid players the Washington Nationals have on their roster, and they made sure he’s not going anywhere. The Washington Post is reporting that the two sides agreed on a five-year extension worth approximately $45 million. The deal goes into effect immediately and overrides Ryan’s current $3.325 million salary.

Good, Bad, and Ugly: Washington Nationals Lose Late Lead, Game to Marlins

THE RESULT: For the third day in a row, the Washington Nationals took a lead into the ninth inning. For the third day in a row, they lost. Today, it was a 7-4 loss to the Florida Marlins.  Michael Hinckley and Saul Rivera gave up one-run leads in the eighth and ninth innings respectively, and Rivera paid for it with his job.

Hinckley surrendered a solo home run with two outs in the eighth to Cody Ross to tie the game at three.
