As many of you know, the Boston Red Sox have been looking at potential shortstop replacements such as JJ Hardy, Omar Vizquel, Erick Aybar, Yunel Escobar, Orlando Cabrera, Hanley Ramirez and Bobby Crosby.
But, Nick Green has been tearing the cover off the ball so far this season, including his walk-off home run earlier today.
That brings up a question: Do the Red Sox actually need another shortstop?
The answer: No.
Nick Green and Jed Lowrie can platoon there for the rest of the season, and the anemic Julio Lugo can be traded to the Nationals or the Mariners for some sort of bad, never-going-to-make-it-to-the-big-leagues prospect.
When Lowrie comes back from injury, he will take over the starting job, with Green getting starts for about two-three games a week.
And I honestly don't care what GM Theo Epstein does with Lugo, as long as it doesn't result in Green or Lowrie being sent down to the minor leagues, traded or released.
I hope that Lugo is traded, and the Red Sox get some sort of hitter in return, even with David Ortiz's hot streak.
Even though the Lugo-for-hitter trade probably will be laughed off by any other GM, the Red Sox could throw in some sort of prospect—but Theo probably wouldn't want to give up a prospect that could get Boston a decent hitter and look okay for the other team.
In short: The Red Sox should keep Green and Lowrie, and get rid of Lugo.
