Chicago Cubs: Injuries? No Problem!

Just a couple of short weeks ago, Cubs fans everywhere were gritting their collective teeth and wondering what was happening. The Cubs were taking a nosedive, and the season had hardly begun. This was an anomaly, because, as all true Cubs fans know, the time for failure with the Cubs is sometime in September.

But that is a story for another day.

I personally was disgusted with the Cubs failure to play good baseball. Then I woke up on Friday and glanced at their record. Guess what? The Cubbies have the same record as they did last year at this time.

Now yes, I was aware they had a couple of winning streaks recently and were playing a little better ball, but they are an injury decimated team. They hobbled through the last couple weeks with their starting lineup looking somewhat inadequate.

The Cubs are now a half game back in the division, and are ready to make a run. The starting pitchers have contributed 20 quality starts. Milton Bradley is finally starting to hit a little bit (.417) over the last seven days.

Micah Hoffpauir has contributed in the absence of Derek Lee and Aramis Ramirez. He is batting .292 on the season. With Lee and Ramirez gone, the top of the order has been stellar. Fukudome is batting .340 on the year.

With ace Carlos Zambrano out with a hamstring injury, the Cubs started Randy Wells, who pitched five scoreless innings in his first major league start. The Cubs will continue to hit well and with the return of Ramirez and Zambrano, start to pull away in the division.
