Come to Think of it: Cheating Steve Phillips Fired by ESPN

"When you become the cheating baseball player, it becomes who you are, and nobody wants to walk around with that." - Steve Phillips

So what about if you're a cheating ex-GM who spouts incredible wisdom to ESPN audiences on a regular basis? Do you become the cheating ex-GM or the cheating ex-ESPN analyst? Inquiring minds want to know, Steve.

Ah, Steve Phillips. Now here's a guy who talks about the impact of cheating in the sport of baseball when, all the while, the moron is cheating on his wife. Nice.

Phillips was fired by ESPN after he confirmed an affair with a 22-year-old staffer. He has entered a treatment center, though it has not been confirmed if he is being treated for drugs, alcohol, sex addiction, or stupidity.

The ex-New York Mets GM worked for ESPN in a variety of roles, serving as a studio analyst on Baseball Tonight and in the TV booth, helping to dumb down the broadcast of Jon Miller with the equally befuddled Joe Morgan on Sunday Night Baseball.

Well, he'll be watching from his couch from now on. This is the second time an affair has soiled his reputation, the first having occurred when he was a Mets employee. So much for learning from one's mistakes.

Meanwhile, perhaps Phillips can resurrect his baseball career on the MLB Network. After all, they hired another ex-ESPN analyst accused of sexual improprieties in Harold Reynolds. Of course, Reynolds actually has some lucid baseball thoughts, unlike our hero Mr. Phillips.

I don't know about you, but I will miss the wisdom that could only come from Steve Phillips. Oh, and Joe Morgan. Forgot about him for a minute. Wonder what dumbass they will get to replace him in the booth? Hey, maybe they can pry Tim McCarver out from under Joe Buck's ass.

So what will teams like the Nationals do without Phillips' guidance? When asked what he would do to fix the Nats, Steve had this gem: "They need to focus more on getting 'baseball players' rather than players with great tools. They need guys with grit, toughness, and the ability to play the game as opposed to strong guys who have speed but can't use those tools in the game."

The heck with talent, give me gritty players. Does that mean they have to be white, Steve?

"You go back to 2000, only one team that has led the league in home runs has made the playoffs (Yanks in 2003)."

Um, Steve, you mean other than the White Sox in 2008, the Yankees in 2007, the Yankees in 2004, and the 2003 Braves?

And so on. So it seems his life mirrors his work try to get by hoping that others don't catch on.

Well, consider yourself caught, Steve. And I'd like to say we'll miss you but I don't like to lie. Unlike you, my friend come to think of it.
