Omar Minaya has drawn a lot of ire from fans for his questionable acquisitions and lack of what people had been demanding (Manny Ramirez and Derek Lowe come to mind).
Minaya said that his leaders are either too quiet (Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado) or have smiles on their faces (Jose Reyes and David Wright).
Much has been said about Beltran and Delgado and the manner in which they conduct themselves quietly in public, but behind closed doors. they are a vocal force in the clubhouse.
Reyes and Wright are still relatively young players having fun and winning is what will keep the smiles on their faces. These two young stars are on a huge stage in New York and know they are under a microscope but recognize that they are playing a game.
Wright took exception to what Minaya said to the media about the lack of edge among his leaders and people are now criticizing him for this, mainly because of his April struggles.
By saying that Wright and Reyes "do not have an edge," he was implying that Wright was practically laughing off his rough April, but those who do know David Wright have no doubt that there has been no laughing about this issue.
Last night, Wright seemed to be getting past his April struggles having two hits, a RBI single and a double, which set up a sac fly to score Carlos Beltran.
Jose Reyes is also mired in a slump and is not getting on base to wreak havoc on the bases, and whether this is something he is taking lightly remains to be seen.
Last night Mike Pelfrey and his teammates take the first of 19 games against the Philadelphia Phillies.
You do have to wonder what was said in that clubhouse before the game in response to what Minaya said, but whatever it was, they did take it to heart and played a great game.
