Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected in the fifth inning yesterday but still takes credit for removing reliever Brian Bruney in the eighth even though, technically, bench coach Tony Pena was the acting manager.
“The reason I made that pitching change is that I didn’t want (Bruney) to throw a ton of pitches and not be available (today),” Girardi said.
Notice Girardi’s use of the first-person in talking about Bruney. He took Bruney out, it wasn’t Pena who pulled him. This is not big news for most baseball fans. A manager is not making so many moves that he can’t easily manage while watching the game on TV from the clubhouse.
Usually, the one thing manager’s do have to sacrifice after getting tossed is that they cannot signal the pitchers and the hitters during each at-bats, but sometimes they can even find away around that. As many fans might remember, one time when then Mets manager Bobby Valentine slapped on a phony mustache and managed the game from the stands.
