Though the Sox exceeded the expectations of many pre-season predictions, they still finished a distant second to the Twins and enter the off-season with some work to do.

Before we even talk about making any upgrades to the roster, the Sox have several major decisions to make regarding their current players. The team already has a number of sizable salary commitments and would need to make a few more to keep this same core together.

Money will be a big theme this off-season, and Kenny Williams will probably have to creative to improve this team.

October is upon us once again.  It is one thing that is almost as certain as death and taxes, yet at the same time, can never be scripted as FOX claims.  The plot is about ready to thicken as September ends and October commences.

There is something about the aura of October that always keeps us guessing, its essence is so subtle and can never be fully explained.  The things that have happened in past Octobers  are still mysteries that will remain unsolved.

Past assessments and predictions on my part have been mixed: In 2008, I successfully predicted the winner of four of the seven possible series; in 2009, I successfully predicted the winner of five of the seven possible series, including the two pennant winners.

It took until the last game of the season, but they did it.  Now, it’s the same as if they’d won the division by 10 games, so bring on the Braves!

It feels like it’s been more than six years since the last time the Giants made the playoffs.  We had to put up with some pretty bad seasons from 2005 through 2008, but it’s all worth it now.

The initial champagne has been popped and the celebrations have come and past. Now that the playoff series are set, we can begin talking about matchups and how far each team will go.

We have the Wild Card winning Atlanta Braves going to San Francisco to start their series with the NL West Champion Giants on Thursday.

The NL East Champion Phillies will host the NL Central's Reds starting on Wednesday.

The divisional round of the baseball playoffs begin this week.

All eight teams have at least 90 wins. This is only the third time since 2000 that each playoff team has hit the ninety-win plateau. It certainly means that the cream has risen to the top.

It took the entire 162 game season to clarify the playoff pairings for both leagues.

In the American League the AL East Division title was still up in the air. Tampa Bay's victory assured them the AL East title, and the best record in the league.

And it worked like a charm.

They're back. After a seven-year absence from the postseason, the Giants hosting the wild-card wining Atlanta Braves in an upcoming Division Series. It has been a roller coaster of a season for the team by the bay.

In early July the Giants were in fourth place in the NL West and 4.5 games back. Then, after taking a three game lead, they dropped two to San Diego (SD was 12-6 this season against SF) and had to go to the final game of the season to clinch their berth. But they did it—and hope to follow it up with a World Series ring.
