To make playoffs, Rockies must be clutch

The Colorado Rockies finished the first half of the 2010 season ten games above .500 and two games behind the San Diego Padres in the National League West race.

Mets Looking For Offense, Hisanori Takahashi To Replace Mike Pelfrey

SAN FRANCISCO: The Mets offense during the first two games in San Francisco has been M.I.A. After getting shut out Thursday night, manager Jerry Manuel attempted something drastically different last night, batting Jason Bay second, and well, the Mets got shut out again.

Once again, after being told he'd play, Jose Reyes was out of the lineup. He did take batting practice around 6:15pm local time, and batted from both sides of the plate.

New York Yankees: How the Tampa Bay Rays Will Shape the Season

Of the Yankees’ remaining 74 games of the 2010 regular-season schedule, 13 are against the Tampa Bay Rays. That’s nearly 18% of all remaining games for the Yankees against the rival best team in baseball. The first of those showdowns between the two powerhouses begins today.

For a snapshot of where we are today, July 16, the AL East Standings look like this:

Big News For New York Yankees: Curtis Granderson Can Hit Lefties?

Much will be made of the Yankees’ terrific victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the first game after the All-Star Break. There was the somber aspect of the first game since Steinbrenner’s death. There were the dramatic back-to-back shots from Robbie Cano and Jorge Posada to tie the game in the 6th. There were the heroic hits from Nick Swisher–first, the game-tying dinger to lead off the 8th and then the game-winning single in the 9th.

Small Market Omar Minaya Must Make Big Move for New York Mets

Sports are all about adjustments. In football, the quarterback must adjust the play based on what the opposing team is doing. It is the same in other sports as well. In-game adjustments at halftime and between periods are a necessity for success. Baseball is no different.

Big Night By Nick Swisher on Tribute Night for George Steinbrenner

On a night when hearts were heavy and tears were plentiful, the New York Yankees Nick Swisher capped a momentous evening with a single in the bottom of the 9th inning. The single, Swisher's third hit of the night, scored Curtis Granderson with the winning run in a 5-4 victory at Yankee Stadium--the House the Boss Built.

Props to F. P. Santangelo

As Giants fans know, F. P. Santangelo is the Giants’ fifth radio/TV announcer.  He provides “color” when the team needs a fifth announcer, which doesn’t happen all that often since Jon Miller, Dave Fleming, Mike Krukow, and Duane Kuiper can usually handle both radio and TV on any given date.

George Steinbrenner, Bob Sheppard Honored By Ceremony, Walk-Off Friday

Yankee Stadium, both the Old and the New, has seen its fair share of dramatics.

On Friday night, Yankee lore honored the passing of two great men that meant much more to the Yankee franchise and the game of baseball than can ever be expressed in words.

Thursday afternoon, designs for the commemorative patches to honor Yankee Principal Owner George Steinbrenner and long-time Public Address Announcer Bob Sheppard were released. Friday evening, they made their debut.

MLB: Barry Zito Outduels Jonathan Niese as Mets Lose Second Straight

For the second straight game, the Mets got shut out by the Giants—this time 1-0 at AT&T Park.

Barry Zito pitched an absolute gem, one which may have even been better then Tim Lincecum’s start yesterday.

The Mets lineup seemed lost without Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan . It was a Mets lineup that featured Jeff Francoeur as the five hitter, Ruben Tejada as the leadoff man, and Jason Bay hitting second.

Ten Best Prospect Bets To Impact Playoff Contenders Come September

Ever since David Price's shut-down relief pitching a few years ago in the ALCS, teams have become more dependent on hot-shot prospects down the stretch.

And you just know that's going to be the case this season, especially with the sustained success of the rookie class of 2010, that includes Stephen Strasburg, Carlos Santana, and the possibly playoff-bound Buster Posey, Mike Leake, and Jason Heyward.

But aside from those big names, there's several of lesser known ones that could end up playing huge roles this September for the stretch run, and on into October, once playoff baseball arrives.
