Marlon Anderson was cut by the New York Mets today to make room for Livan Hernandez, the starting pitcher in today's game against the Marlins.
Originally an "okay field, some hit" second baseman with the Phillies, Anderson had two stints with the Mets as a utility player, mostly as an outfielder and pinch hitter. As a Met, he batted .254 with 11 home runs over parts of four seasons. Widely praised as a pinch hitter, Anderson has batted .273 over his career in that role.
A veteran of 10 major league seasons, he is also a great clubhouse presence and is respected by his teammates. Yet this season, he was hitless in four at bats as a pinch hitter and it didn't look like he had very much left in the tank.
Now, as an "old" 34-year-old without a permanent position and clearly not a full-time player, he can be signed for the remainder of the season for the major-league minimum, prorated to the number of days left in the season. Good luck, Marlon, and let's hope "respected clubhouse veteran" gets you a bench spot on a young team.
