We all know the Mets need to make changes after a disappointing 2009 season. All idea—for change need to be considered
That is why I look at the Tigers and see a possible answer for the Mets. I believe trading Carlos Beltran for Curtis Granderson and Joel Zumaya can help this team.
I know what you are thinking. Beltran is one of the best players on our team. Why would you trade him for a player that is not as good as him?
Well, I have four reasons why I think this is a good idea.
First, getting younger is always good. Beltran is 33 years old and getting past his prime. Both Granderson (28) and Zumaya (25) are on the right side of 30.
Second, I do not think getting one new free agent is going to make the team the best in the NL East. To get more free agents you need money. Beltran is currently making $18.6 million per year for the next two years.
Yes, the Mets will need to pay part of his salary, but not all of it. Lets say the Mets need to pay $10 million (and I am over doing it). The other $8 million is a lot of money that would help the Mets get players like John Lackey and Matt Holliday.
Third, the Mets need bullpen help and Zumaya may be a cheap, but good, option.
Finally, Beltran has had injury problems with the Mets and shouldn't risk their future on him.
Don't get me wrong, I love Carlos Beltran. I believe be is the best centerfielder of our generation. But the Mets need an infusion of new blood.
If the Mets do not want to be the same 70-92 team they were last season, they will need to change a lot this offseason.
Granderson is a great player who the Tigers are looking to trade. Trading for him gives the Mets a shot at becoming a better team.
