O'l Heart Of Mine Strikes Gold: Baseball, St. Patty's Day In The Desert

We wandered in here the week of the UW vs Arizona State game after walking two miles from 3rd and Mill to East Apache Blvd. and Rural in 100 degree weather, in search of liquor and food. Fortunately for us, this place specializes in both.

The Baers Den is a must stop if visiting just for Game Day or for Baseball's Fall and Spring training camps.

The thought is that I would do a follow-up to my article that was written on October 22, 2009.

We spent 11 days in Tempe for Spring Training and St. Patrick's day in the desert.

A sidelight to start the trip; we had to walk about 1/2 mile to get to our hotel which was next to the Baer's Den.

We met up with Floyd Walz who is considered the unofficial Mayor East Apache Blvd. and Manager of the Hotel we stayed at. We didn't see Floyd after that day because he fell that night had to be rushed to the hospital. Floyd had hip replacement and when he fell, he landed on his hip and it came out of it's socket.

Floyd, my best wishes to you. Have a speedy recovery and rehabilitation.

As being newbie to baseball's spring training, it was an amazing experience. Had to keep asking myself if this was "heaven" at the spring training games. Large crowds, everybody with smiles on their faces and just a totally relaxed atmosphere.

Watching the games were secondary. Socializing was the priority and of course girl watching.

On St Patrick's day it was fun and a "long day." Rena Hindman who owns the Lucky Devil Bar and Grill in Tempe had chartered service of two buses to the Giants vs A's game. We went her and her husband to the game. Green beer galore and any other thing that would come to your mind.

To all the friends I made, you folks made the trip special. To the Huffman's, Jake and Susie, (Casual Living Experts). Thank you for your knowledge and chaffeur service. Pittsburg Jimmy, I bring the Salmon next year.

The Baer's Den over the last 30 years has become a mecca for Spring Training Baseball. They are the official home of the Red Sox Nation Arizona. I guess that would be logical since the owner Scott Baer is from Boston, MA.

The same people for the last 30 years have come to Baer's Den and stayed at the hotel next door. The 20 or so people who come every year is like a family reunion. They come from places like Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Seattle, San Diego, Minnesota and California.

They don't bite down at the bite at the Bear's Den Bar and Grill. They just make you wish baseball's spring training and St. Patrick's Day never came to an end, because it doesn't get any better than the green eggs and ham breakfast, biscuits and gravy on weekends, drink special's, cold beer, customer's and friend's from all part of the United States, excellent customer service, sun shinning, dry air, and nothing but blue on the horizon.

When an independent local icon like the Bear's Den Bar and Grill treats their clientele in a vastly superior manner, it demands immediate, unbridled adoration and patronage.

To Rena Hindman the owner of The Lucky Devil Bar and Grill, Patty Roberts a bartender at the Bear's Den, like the song from Billy Ocean states: Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car.

To my Traveling Friend, Rick Barton: "Is This Heaven!"
