When I first heard that game 3 of the NLDS between the Rockies and Phillies was postponed to tomorrow night, my immediate reaction was one of selfish discontent.
This would have been a great opportunity for the Rockies to get a victory over an ancient Pedro Martinez, who I'm sure will be glad to know he will now be able to hit up the Country Buffet for an early dinner and be in bed by 7:00.
The Phillies would certainly have been at a disadvantage tonight, and having to rely on their shaky bullpen in the inclement weather had me licking my chops. Not to mention this now gives them the ability to pitch Lee in game four and a focused Hamels in game five, both on full rest, which is an obvious advantage to Philly.
The worst part of all was the fact that my only viewing option tonight will now be to watch CU lose to Texas by 72 points.
Like I said, selfish discontent.
As I gave this situation a little more thought, I began to realize that the real loser in all of this was actually much larger than just myself or the Rockies.
The real loser is that fan who bought tickets for tonight's game, but will have to eat his ticket because for whatever reason will be unable to attend tomorrow. The real loser is that father of four who had been looking forward to toughing out tonight's game with some liquid courage and sleeping off his hangover tomorrow. The real loser is that Rockies fan that has moved to the east coast and will now have to stay up until one in the morning to see the last pitch on a work night.
I just don't understand the decision by MLB to cancel the game tonight. Sure, it's colder outside than a Phillies fan towards Cole Hamel's wife, but there isn't even a snow flake in sight.
Since when can baseball not be played in the cold?
There should have been baseball played in Colorado tonight. There should have been stories told to grandchildren about weathering through the coldest game ever played in postseason history. There should have been hot toddies and chicken soup in thermoses, hand warmers in every conceivable crevice, and clothing layered on like an Arctic expedition. There should have been a legend created tonight.
But instead, we get a 10:07 PM ET start for game three.
Now, depending on the outcomes of the next two games, in addition to a smorgasbord of other combinations, we will see MLB sticking this series into whatever crap time slot they can find, hidden behind other series that will really make them money.
