San Francisco Giants Have Great Pitching, Bad Timing

The 2009 Winter Meetings have concluded, and the San Francisco Giants came away looking like they did little, but probably did plant the seeds for a deal or two to take place.

Rumors continue to persist that the Giants are still talking with the Florida Marlins regarding Dan Uggla in exchange for TBD Giants' players. Also, reports that Giants have offers before Mark DeRosa and maybe Nick Johnson and LaRoche, as possible Giants' first baseman.

It's too early to conclude that the Giants are being too thrifty or cheap as numerous opinions seem to be indicating. However, if Spring Training convenes with the team and especially the hitting as is, then I may reach the same conclusion.

Aside from Scott Boras, there is the more general belief that the Giants revenue can support a higher payroll than the projected $90 million Brian Sabean seems to be tied to.

Now, while this could be true, keep in mind that the Giants still have a few years left on their "mortgage" payments for AT&T Park, which the Giants built, NOT the City and County of San Francisco, CA.

Now, the Giants have all this great pitching. Two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum, the "Clemens-like" Matt Cain, Cy Young winner Barry Zito, no-hitter Jonathan Sanchez, and TBD (they should've signed Brad Penny, imho).  This is a once in a lifetime or generation Starting Pitching Rotation and perhaps one of the best in history. I think the best in Giants history.

So, why not spend, and seize this opportunity now to win a sixth and maybe another world championship in franchise history (first in San Francisco Giants history)? Why not put the Giants on the national scene; create genuine legacy for this great long standing franchise; and increase franchise value, perhaps two-fold?

The goal of any good ownership is to make money, but most importantly increase the overall value of the franchise they own—bottom line. And, there is still no real better way than winning and getting on the national scene.

While the Giants may have their hands tied due to their “mortgage” payments for a few more years, they can’t wait. If they wait, this current pitching staff in today’s era of free agency could soon be disbanded or even gone in a few years time. So, the time is now, not later. Bird in hand…

Therefore, the Giants ownership, in the interests of long or midterm franchise value gain, should dig deeper now and financially support this maybe once in a lifetime or generation chance and win now (and not wait for a maybe, later). Give Brian Sabean the money to close the two or three deals needed to improve the Giants offense.  What do you think?
