Good teams often have a certain attitude about them, a brashness that often borders on cockiness. That is why I enjoyed New York Mets third baseman David Wright's recent proclamation that the Mets are going to win the World Series.
According to the New York Post, shortstop Jose Reyes also got in the spirit shortly after Wright's bold prediction. According to Kevin Kernan, "Reyes said over in the minor league clubhouse that there is "no doubt" the Mets can make it to the World Series and win it all."
Look, despite what our eyes tell us and our minds believe, it is good for players to have this confident feeling.
For 2009 was a lost year for the Mets, mainly due to injuries that plagued the team. From Reyes to Carlos Beltran, and several players in between, they simply had no chance.
Meanwhile, there is this not-so-small issue of Wright finding his lost power.
Yes, I suppose many wish that he would just keep his mouth shut and work to restore his power numbers to the .546 slugging percentage he has enjoyed in the past.
Last year, Wright dipped to .447, hitting only 10 homers in 144 games.
Some point to the new stadium. So does that mean that the lowering of the wall will help restore Wright's lost power?
Fellow Bleacher Report FC Joe Fiorello doesn't think that the height of the center field wall at Citi Field had much to do with Wright's power outage.
In any case, Wright is still an elite hitter, as his .390 OBP would suggest. And there is no doubting that he is one of the leaders on this team, so what he says makes a difference.
And let's face it, this team could use some positive energy because no one believes in the Mets right now.
