Yankees Fans: It's Time to Talk about the Present, Not the Past

During out experiences with sports, whether with friends and counterparts, people on or anywhere else, you probably have a friend and a foe out of the million of Yankee fans in the world.
Well, I sure do have them. At the age I'm at, I always like to joke to my friends about the Yankees, whether losing to the Red Sox, my favorite team, or just any team in baseball.
In all of good fun, they return the favor when the Yankees win, my team loses, and especially when they beat the Orioles. Yet, after I bring up what is happening now to the Yankees, they always go for the past.
Whether it's the famous, "How many World Series do we have? Huh? Huh?" or simply, "How Many Do You Have," I never give the facts I could and should give, as I don't want to ruin the playful argument.
However, it is really getting to me, as a baseball fan.
Frankly, to me, being more intelligent with my sports knowledge (nothing against them), I feel it is something that is getting too out-of-date to say, and that shouldn't be an excuse anymore.
Yes, you have won 26 Championships, and probably make the best case for the best franchise in the history of sports. But does it make it right to think this way?
I began to realize the true meaning of what Yankees fans think after watching the Bronx Is Burning, the hit TV show on ESPN about the 1977 World Champion Yankees.
This year began the true dynasty of the Yankees, the show in the New York papers from April through September, year after year.
Yet, we are in 2009, and when talking about the present Yankees, this is discussed. Why is it still brought up? Should a team or person only be judged by it's successful past, and not the present?
If so, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Alex Rodriguez, and others should be in the Hall of Fame based on their past stats. And the fact should be ignored of them testing for steroids right now.
The point is, just because the Yankees have been very successful over the past several decades doesn't give any fan the right to use it as an excuse for the dissapointments and failures that have come up since their last World Championship.
If we look at the current Yankees' roster, only four men have won a World Series with the Yankees: Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera, the latter of whom might be the only Yankee player I would actually root for, to a certain extent.
After that, no one has a title with the Yankees. Maybe it's been too long since the Yankees won the title that they can't help but revert back to the so-called good years.
Heck, I don't know, I'm not a Yankee fan, just a guy who likes all sports.
Maybe it is, infact, me. Am I jealous of my own team not being successful, like the Yankees have been? Am I the only one who is experiencing this type of thought?
Nah, I doubt it.
I do know, however, Yankee fans will have their doubts about me, and may think I'm writing this article out of frustration over my own team; I'm not.
I am not the type of guy who looks for remorse about his or her teams, but I must imagine there are other Yankees fans, like this, who act the same way.
I write the truth and only what is on my mind, and just out of respect for the viewers, do not throw "digs" at teams I do not like.
I am sure the next time the Yankees win a World Series, I will hear about it, which wouldn't be surprising, especially coming from Yankees fans.
But the fact is: It may hurt some Yankees fans to not have the excitement of winning a 27th Title, but unfortunately, it shouldn't result in trying to ignore the present, and only talk about the past.
Life moves on, nobody wants to go through with it, including myself. But until then, the Yankees fans that feel this way need to move on and give a positive voice about their team from here on out.
