MLB: Five Great Things about Opening Day

With only three days until the first pitch, the 135th Opening Day in Major League Baseball history is almost here. It's only fitting to examine what is so special about this annual American rite of passage.

Just say the words "Opening Day," and all American sports fans know exactly what you are talking about. No need to even mention the sport.

Baseball's Opening Day stands alone.

It seems as though something unique happens every season on that day.

San Francisco Giants Need Veteran Bats to Step Up to Achieve Success

Since the departure of Barry Bonds two seasons ago, the San Francisco Giants have undergone a youth movement—from the completely revamped and most feared starting rotation in the major leagues, to the likes of Pablo Sandoval and Eugenio Velez in the infield.

The Giants will be expecting big numbers from Sandoval, dubbed the “Kung-Fu Panda” by teammate Barry Zito...a nickname that has since stuck. They will also need contributions from Velez, who has been up and down for the last three seasons, as well as outfielder Fred Lewis.

A's Welcomed Back to Coliseum by Sold out Crowd

Life has meaning again.

No more will Friday nights be spent sitting at home with the sister, wondering what to do. No longer will there be debates with the boyfriend about what to do on a Sunday afternoon.

No longer will the jerseys emblazoned with green and gold be stuffed in the backside of the closet where good clothes go to die.

Why, you may ask?

Baseball is back in business in Oakland and it doesn’t get much sweeter than that.

On The Rocky Mountain Way: A Recap Of The Phillies First Week

I would have written this article earlier if I had not heard the sad news. Sad news everyone. The legendary, Hall of Fame broadcaster, Harry Kalas; THE voice of the Phillies has passed away.

Mr. Kalas was found unconscious in the broadcasting booth prior to the beginning of the Washington Nationals- Philadelphia Phillies game this afternoon, April 13. It seems fitting for some reason that Mr. Kalas would “go” in the booth. It just seems fitting.

World Series MVP Cole Hamels Out Opening Night Versus Atlanta Braves

According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, Philadelphia lefty Cole Hamels is officially out of consideration for opening night versus the Atlanta Braves.

After injuring his pitching elbow a few weeks ago, Philly "phans" were sure their ace was going to be good to go on Apr. 5.

However, after allowing 10 hits against the pride of Philadelphia's farm on Mar. 30 in four innings (he also walked one and Kd five), pitching coach Rich Dubie said the Philly Phenom's control just wasn't good enough for the season's first game.
