The Fantastic Mr. Fox: A's-Cubs Trade Liberates Suppressed Talent

Is it weird that I continue to root for my fantasy players even after their tenures on my team have ended?

Take Matt Holliday. After limping to an 0-3 start in my most important Head-to-Head league in 2007, I swung a deal for a young slugger who I admittedly didn’t know much about. I went 13-1 after the trade. Coincidence?

Frank Wren Has All the Time and Money He Needs to Make Atlanta Braves a Winner

It is surprising how one minute you're considered a genius and another minute a fool.

Frank Wren has already at the very beginning pulled off two sensational signings. Yet Rafael Soriano's consideration for the offer of arbitration has everyone second-guessing.

"How could Wren sign those aging pitchers?"

"How's he going to get a bat if Soriano ties up $7 million?"

First off, relief pitchers can easily go into their mid to late 40s.  This is simply because they only throw 15 to 20 pitches an outing 40 to 90 games a year.

Cincinnati's Redsfest Was a Home Run

On Friday afternoon, we picked the kids up early from school and headed to Cincinnati for Redsfest.  If you have never been to the annual celebration of baseball during the winter months, it is well worth the time and money.  Opportunities for autographs and pictures with players are just some of the attractions.

There are games for kids of all ages and more Reds memorabilia than you can possibly imagine.

Milton Bradley For Gil Meche? Chicago Cubs Talking To Kansas City Royals

Baseball's Winter Meetings have begun, and there isn't a team with as clear-cut a mission this week as the Chicago Cubs: get rid of Milton Bradley.

It appears Cubs GM Jim Hendry will do everything in his power to unload the switch-hitting outfielder/designated hitter this week after the marriage between the volatile Bradley and the organization, and Cubs fans, went south in terribly public fashion.

Seattle Mariners Ready to Play with the Big Boys

The Seattle Mariners mean business.

General Manager Jack Zduriencik is entering just his second offseason at the club’s helm, but clearly has the franchise headed in the right direction.

Last offseason, he engineered a number of low-risk, high-reward deals and helped turnaround a club that had just 61 wins in 2008 to 85 victories a year ago.

White House Party Crashers Invited To Lowell Spinners Alumni Dinner

The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will welcome Red Sox star, and 2001 Spinner, Kevin Youkilis back to Lowell for the Eighth Annual Lowell Spinners Alumni Dinner, Tuesday, December 29 at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in downtown Lowell.

With the date fast approaching, the Spinners are continuing to add to the guest list, confirming former Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman and former New York Met Mike Glavine will be in attendance.

St. Louis Cardinals on the Road to Off-Season Disaster

The MLB winter meetings are commencing this week in Indianapolis.

Perhaps the St. Louis Cardinals could pencil in a 15-minute sidebar in economics. Perhaps they could commandeer fellow executives to a session where they instructed them on the finer points on looking like asshats.

Or maybe they could just ask the Oakland A’s for Brett Wallace back. Pretty, pretty please?

Will the New York Mets and Kansas City Royals Find Common (Trade) Ground?

The Kansas City Royals are the current grist being ground in the rumor mill that is Major League Baseball's hot stove season.

I suppose it is a welcome change for the oft-maligned and hardly spoken of club, because as the saying goes, "any press is good press. "

Nick Swisher Is the True Catalyst of the 2009 New York Yankees

The 2009 New York Yankees will be remembered for the following: World Series Champions, Alex Rodriguez’s steroid controversy, and the $423 million in salary for their newest recruits, CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, and A.J. Burnett.

The most underrated signing on this champion roster is that of Nick Swisher.

Swisher brought back the swagger that the late '90s, early millennium Yankee squads had, but had been missing for some time.

A Log For The Hot Stove: Felipe Lopez

The announcements of players offered arbitration made Twins fans happy last weekend as three names being bandied about—Placido Polanco, Orlando Hudson, and Felipe Lopez—were all set free by their respective teams. This was particularly important for Hudson and Polanco, since due to their Type-A status they would have cost a first-round pick to sign. In the past, the Twins have been reticent to sign players and give up their pick, so this was indeed a prime development.
