What's Wrong with Javier Vazquez?

There are probably fewer things more frustrating to a sports fan than watching an expensive, recently imported veteran player repeatedly fail in his efforts to help the team.

The more prior success he's had, the more money he's making, the more you had to give up to get him...well, that all just makes it worse.

And then there's Javy Vazquez.

Vazquez had all of those things against him:

Should the New York Yankees Start Sergio Mitre With Javier Vazquez Struggling?

In the beginning of the 2010 season, a lot of things have gone right for the Yankees.

Curtis Granderson is fitting well into the center field spot for the Yankees, as is Brett Gardner in the left field spot.

Phil Hughes is doing a tremendous job as the fifth starter while for the most part, Joba Chamberlain has done a good job as the setup man.

However, there has been one glitch so far in the 2010 season: Javier Vazquez.

2010 Pitching Busts: Verlander, Peavy, Beckett Headline List

Like Carlos Zambrano, big-time pitchers Justin Verlander, Jake Peavy, and Josh Beckett are off to awful starts. They are not alone. Names like Jon Lester, Aaron Harang, Javier Vazquez, Chad Billingsley, and Jeremy Bonderman join them on this list of the top ten worst pitchers in 2010.

Virtually all of these pitchers have two things in common. They were expected to be aces, stoppers, shutdown grinders, strike-one dealers. They are all disappointing.

Let’s take a look at how bad they all really are, see if they’re improving, and ask ourselves:

Is this just an April shower?

New York Yankees: Is Javier Vazquez The New Chien-Ming Wang?

Vazquez has now pitched 20 innings, just under half of Wang's 42 last year. Otherwise, their statistics are eerily similar. Both of them have ERAs in the 9s. Vazquez's FIP, or sabermetric ERA, is 6.32, actually higher than Wang's 5.38 was. (FIP is a formulated "ERA" that uses home runs, strikeouts, and base on balls as inputs.)

New York Yankees: Two Pitching Trades the Bronx Bombers Will Regret

This past off season, the New York Yankees made two trades involving pitchers. They will live to regret both trades.

The first is obvious. The Yankees have lost six games in this young season and three of them are directly attributable to horrendous efforts by Javier Vazquez.

Vazquez was acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Braves to be the Yankees fourth starter. The way he has pitched so far, he should the the fourth member of the grounds crew.

Brett Gardner Daily Update: April 26, 2010

Brett Gardner finished Saturday's win hitting .340 for the New York Yankees as they won their 12th game over the Angels. He has also stolen nine bases which puts him on a pace to steal about 85 for the year.

Gardner did not start in the series finale in Anaheim on Sunday afternoon as the Yankees lost the game and their first series of the season.

Marcus Thames was in Gardner's place as southpaw Scott Kazmir started for Los Angeles.

Thames did get a hit, a base on balls and scored a run.

Los Angeles Angels Hand New York Yankees First Series Loss of the Season

Kendry Morales was 3-for-3 with three RBI, and Brandon Wood delivered a clutch two-run double to lead Los Angeles to an 8-4 triumph over New York on Sunday at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. New York dropped their first series of the season after winning their first five. Los Angeles improved to 19-8 at home against the Yankees dating back to the 2006 season.

Winning for Javier Vazquez Would Cure All

Ever since the Yankees reacquired Javier Vazquez, fans have been cool to the once former Yankee. Quite a few have remarked how he isn’t a good enough pitcher and some think he brings less value than Melky Cabrera would have.

Bobby Murcer, Thurman Munson, and Gene Michael: Not Mantle and Maris

August 10 was the highlight of the 1969 season for New York Yankees fans.

New York's other team, the beloved New York Mets, would not have its greatest moments until October.
