Sammy Sosa: The Shattering of an Icon

This piece was originally published on June 4, 2009 when Sammy Sosa announced he would retire.

In a move that was typical of the strange ending of his baseball career, Sammy Sosa announced Wednesday that he'll announce his retirement sometime soon.

That's right, an announcement that he's going to make an announcement.

Sosa has seen an incredibly awkward fall from grace on Chicago's North Side, where he became one of the greatest power hitters in the history of the game.

Each Team's Flaws in the National League Central

As of today, the National League Central is the closest division in all of baseball as all six teams are within four and a half games of first place. Leading the way are the Milwaukee Brewers with a 35-29 record followed by the Cardinals, Reds, Cubs, Pirates, and finally the Astros. As we are about a third of the way into the season, each team in the division has a flaw that will need to be fixed if they are to have a shot at winning the division.

My Two Cents

St. Louis Cardinals: By The Numbers

After a week or so of below-average baseball, the Cardinals still find themselves in second place in the NL Central.

The Milwaukee Brewers Deserve Respect

Before the 2009 season started, there were three teams that were widely viewed as possible contenders for the National League Central crown: the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, and the Cincinnati Reds.

The Cubs were the defending NL Central champs, had the best record in the National League in 2008, and were easily the most talented team in the division.

The Cardinals had the best player in baseball, Albert Pujols, several talented role players, and expected to see a return to dominance of Chris Carpenter.

Curse of the Scapegoat? Chicago Cubs fire Gerald Perry

On Sunday, in a move that can be described as nothing more than blaming the easiest target, the Chicago Cubs fired hitting coach Gerald Perry.

General Manager Jim Hendry threw around the cliche sound bites, saying that a "new voice" was needed and that the team's stars aren't performing to their historical abilities.

What Hendry didn't say was: "I paid $30 million for an overrated right fielder and, with a series of questionable moves, destroyed the chemistry on the best team in the National League."

But what was important was that he stuck to the cliches.

Brewers: Manny Parra has Gone South. What's Next?

For Milwaukee Brewers' fans, the ugliest battle of the month hasn’t been David Letterman vs. Sarah Palin. It has been Brewers' starting pitcher Manny Parra vs. opposing batters. It’s a battle that Parra, with a 13.50 ERA over his last five starts, has been losing.

Saturday, after another horrible start in which he gave up six runs in 1-2/3 innings against a toothless Chicago White Sox lineup, Parra finally lost the war, as he was sent down to AAA Nashville.

Time For Brewers' Manny Parra to Go Down

I don’t know how many proverbial straws Milwaukee Brewers’ starting pitcher Manny Parra is working with, but hopefully this is his last one in Ken Macha’s eyes.

After finishing just 1.2 innings Saturday giving up six earned runs on six hits while walking three and striking out none, Parra has used just about every excuse he could possibly give for his recent struggles.  He is the first pitcher in the MLB to reach eight losses and has not won a decision since May 17th.
