My favorite sport has been disparaged, criticized and unjustly hated on ever since the 1994 strike initiated the decline of baseball into an exclusively older man's game—the new fly fishing, if you will.

The sport lacked the caché of football, lacked the flair of basketball and more recently, lacks the recurring Renaissance that soccer experiences when Americans are patriotically aroused by the notion that we're actually pretty decent at soccer—a sport typically associated with Europe and Latin America.

With Brett Anderson being on the injured list for most of the season, the Oakland A's needed someone to step up to become the ace of the staff while Anderson recovered from his injury. 

All signs pointed to Dallas Braden as being the new ace of the staff.

The highlight of Braden's success came on Mothers Day when he pitched a perfect game. Since then, Braden has struggled. 

Part of the problem has been the lack of run support for the perfect pitcher.

Derek Jeter has never hit for significant power, has never been a huge RBI guy, and has finished a season with a slugging percentage over .500 only once. But he has always been able to hit—and hit and hit and hit.

Jeter is currently 178 hits away from 3,000, which means barring something horrible he is going to be the next player to join this exclusive club.

Where is Jim Mora when you need him?

Rick Porcello got kicked around again on Wednesday night. This has become a common occurrence throughout the 2010 season. Starting against the Chicago White Sox, he only lasted 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs. 

Porcello's season ERA rose from 5.25 to 6.09.

Just like in most of his outings this season, he looked extremely hittable. I know that is a subjective evaluation, but this is an attribute that he did not seem to possess in 2009.

Stephen Strasburg threw a gem in his MLB debut for the Washington Nationals. He struck out 14 batters in seven innings.

Strasburg will be the best pitcher in the MLB for a long time.

Ever since his college days at San Diego State, Stephen Strasburg has been advertised to be the No. 1 pick in the MLB Draft whenever he took the mound.

He has a nasty fastball that topped over 100 miles per hour and made half of Pirates' batters miss. This is his favorite pitch to get players out. This will be one of the best fastballs in the MLB.

Over 21 years ago a young slugger with incredible defensive skills made his debut for the Seattle Mariners.

In Ken Griffey Jr.'s first at-bat in Seattle he hit a home run.

With it, the Seattle fans saw a glimpse of the 20-year-old kid's beautiful swing that would dominate the sport's future. It was 1989 and for the next decade baseball would live and die by the popularity of the home run.
