MLB Trade Deadline Impact: The Big Winners and Even Bigger Losers

Greeting sports fans, and welcome to this special analysis of the trade deadline moves and their impact on fantasy players.  There was a flurry of activity leading up to the July 3 non-waiver deadline, with some teams taking advantage and improving their teams, while others stood by idly and didn’t make any moves.

With David Freese Out For Year, St. Louis Cardinals Should Add Joe Crede

The St. Louis Cardinals' run at an 18th National League pennant took a serious hit Tuesday, when the team learned that rookie third baseman David Freese re-injured a sore right ankle in a rehab start with Double-A Springfield, and will miss the rest of the 2010 season.

After injuring the ankle on June 27, Freese was expected to help rejuvenate a limping Cardinals offense sometime this month. Instead, it appears St. Louis will have to do without him.

But without adding another bat, another National League Central crown seems unlikely.

Ryan Zimmerman A Rising Star For Washington Nationals

Ryan Zimmerman has played on a Washington Nationals team that has been, in a word, lowly since they've shed their Canadian-ness.

Before Stephen Strasburg came along, Zimmerman was quite possibly the only thing the Nationals had to celebrate—an established big league star who hits for average and power, and plays marvelous defense at third base.

But because he plays for the Nationals, Zimmerman has been a very underrated player in baseball but he is far less recognized for his clutch play.

Tom Glavine: A Look Back at an Atlanta Braves Icon

On Friday, August 6, the Atlanta Braves will retire number 47, the number that Tom Glavine wore while pitching the majority of his career in Atlanta.

Drafted in the second round back in 1984, Glavine decided passed up a chance at a hockey career (he was a fourth-round pick in the NHL’s draft) to pitch for the Atlanta Braves.

MLB Trade Deadline Recap: Oakland A's Too Injured To Trade Players

As the July 31st trading deadline passed with a flurry of excitement over the last week, it was all quiet on the western front. Specifically, in Oakland. The unusual and abnormal lack of movement was the focus: for a change, the A’s did not trade away their players—veteran starters or minor league prospects. This is surprising news for the organization, because traditionally around this time of the season, the Athletics rid their roster of salaries and stock up on loads of minor leaguers.

Fantasy Baseball: Peter Bourjos Accelerates into Anaheim

In an interesting move the Angels have called up one of their top prospects, apparently to play center field. Yes, the center field that has been roamed by all-star Torii Hunter since the failed Gary Matthews Jr. signing.

The speedy outfielder is not ultra-hyped Mike Trout, but rather 23-year-old speedster Peter Bourjos .

New York Mets: Are the Mets Really Doomed?

Please be sure to check out Mets Paradise and our forum for everything Mets!

-----

Are the Mets really doomed? Believe it or not, there is a realistic chance the Mets can make the playoffs, even if the Braves series doesn't turn out well. Heck, even if the week as a whole doesn't turn out well. After taking a look at the Mets' schedule, it's not so unrealistic.

Who's Left? Any August Believers Still Out There For The Detroit Tigers?

See that guy in the picture? That's outfielder Magglio Ordonez. Do you know why he is sticking his tongue out at you? Because he is not on the field driving in runs. Because the Tigers look more deserving of a berth in a trash heap than in a pennant race.

Anyone out there have any faith that the Tigers are still in a pennant race?

I certainly hope not. If so, I'm sorry to burst your soap bubble, but allow me to disillusion you. The pipe dream you were in has expired, welcome back to reality.

Pittsburgh Pirates' Trading: Peripheral Players For Possible Core Pieces

The Pirates' vaunted trading desk was busy at the trade deadline, as usual. The nature of the trading was very different from last year. The Pirates' core will likely benefit, rather than suffer, from the deals.

They were not deals of core Pirates, but rather peripheral players. The Pirates exercised more discipline, and made better trades, instead of just engaging in a giveaway motivated by salary dump considerations. They did a much better job of making "stealth" trades that caught people by surprise instead of telegraphing their intentions.
